5 Elements of Cultural Linguistic Competence (CLC)

Five things to remember when considering CLC.

Value Diversity

  • Be awaren and accepting of difference in communication, life view, and definition of health and family

Cultural Self-Assessment

  • Be able to assess one self (system/organization/individual) and have a sense of your own culture and your relationship to others

Manage the Dynamics of Difference

  • Understand that both the consumer and service provider bring culturally prescribed patterns of communication, etiquette, and problem solving styles to the situation
  • Also, different histories and experiences shape our perceptions

Institutionalize Cultural Knowledge

  • Sanctioning and/or mandating the incorporation of cultural knowledge into the service delivery framework and overall system ensures CLC is sustained

Adapt to Diversity

  • System/organization would make adjustments to create a better fit between the consumer and service by adapting policies, structure, values, and the service

The 5 Elements of CLC was adapted from:  Cross, Bazron, Dennis & Isaacs. (1989). “Toward Culturally Competent System of Care.”
